Today, gun-throwing anti-hero Beyond the Grave returns to Gungrave GORE [29 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/games/gungrave-gore”>Gungrave GOREthe series’ first Orthodox sequel since the 2004 follow-up Gungrave: Overdose. This time it is led by Studio IGGYMOB [48 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/companies/studio-iggymob”>Studio IGGYMOB, a South Korean developer whose first venture into the franchise was the release in 2017 Gungrave VR for virtual reality [27 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/genres/virtual-reality”>virtual reality headsets.
“Reviewing it, as a studio, we liked that the gameplay and the characters gave us that nostalgic feeling,” Kay Kim, COO of Studio IGGYMOB, told Gematsu “href=”https:/ /www.gematsu.com/companies/gematsu”>Gematsu. “With the original, people fell in love with the distinct look and design of the game in this over-the-top world. This distinctive gameplay and character charm played a significant role in our decision to revive the Gungrave intellectual property. As fans of the show, this was a new and exciting challenge.
The first one Gungrave was developed by RED Entertainment, which still owns the intellectual property rights. While its gameplay received mixed reception at the time, its character designs by Yasuhiro Nightow were highly praised. And although RED Entertainment is not directly involved in Gungrave GORENightow is still on board in a big way.
“Nightow played an active and important role as director of image for the Gungrave GORE“, explained Kim. “In particular, we worked with Nightow on the character design, the pose, etc. Later, Nightow also helped us come up with names and designs for skills, expanding his role as Image Director even further.
But waiting for a new Gungrave took a long time to come. Gungrave GORE was announced in December 2017 and once had a set release window of Winter 2019, but faced multiple delays as Studio IGGYMOB struggled to find an investor.
“At the time, mobile games were the biggest market in Korea, so it was difficult to receive investment as a console game,” Kim said. “The release of the game was delayed due to the mixture of financial problems and the change in the design of the games. At the beginning, we designed the game as a half-open world [139 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/genres/open-world”>open-world, but we soon realized that this didn’t fit the nature of Gungrave franchise. Looking back, it’s funny now to think that we almost did the title half-open, but we were really serious at the time.
While the idea of an open world was abandoned, Gungrave GORE comes packed with the two new features alongside Gungrave series pillars.
Kim explains, “First of all, we felt it was important to include iconic elements from the franchise, especially unlimited ammo that stays in the game. at high tempo are enhanced with a sleek new look. We included fresh and exhilarating gameplay which enhanced the feel of the game. We added various systems to design cooler and more enjoyable gameplay.
“Our favorite new item is ‘The Storm Barrage’, which lets players pour bullets like a storm. We also have things like ‘RIP’, which lets you stun enemies with a single hit, and ‘Chase “, which allows players to dive into the enemy line. Finally, “Grab” is a lot of fun – it allows you to pull enemies in front of players during combat. There are so many nice melee attack systems and badass that have been added to the game, we are excited for players to get in there and enjoy.
To that end, Grave is also sporting new weapons in addition to his trademark Cerberus and Death Hauler. And even these have been improved.
“The ‘Cerberus’ and ‘Death Hauler’ are still here, but they have more skills, and we’ve added new features to the Death Hauler. In previous iterations, there was no growth, but in Gungrave GORE, the player can develop and strengthen his skills and abilities by upgrading. This will become an important factor in immersion and multiple rounds of play.”
bumpy gore takes place on the fictional island of “Scumland” in Southeast Asia following the events of Gungrave: Overdosebut it’s not essential to have played previous games in the series to follow the story, Kim explained.
“In the main menu, you will find a history section that will inform all players about previous titles and history. So even if players have never played a Gungrave game before it was easy for them to get started. Even those who have experience with previous iterations of the Gungrave franchise can remember history with history section.
With Gungrave GORE across retailers and digital storefronts today, Studio IGGYMOB looks forward to the future of Gungrave franchise.
“We made sure that this new iteration preserves the legitimacy of the Gungrave candor but also elevates it,” Kim said. “Particularly with things like the growth system, but also more rewards in different difficulties for multiple game rounds. If you clear the hardest mode in the game, you can get Brandon Heat as your first entry into the game. I think that’s questionable value as a fan. Also, it will be fun to challenge players for the highest kill count.
“We have ideas for [downloadable content], however we have nothing to share at this time… We are planning the next sequel. Whether Gungrave GORE becomes a success, there is a better chance that we can develop a sequel. We will have to wait and see.
