Food available at DeKalb despite state aid backlog –

Food stamps and other federally funded assistance programs have seen a backlog in DeKalb County and across Georgia, according to Georgia Department of Social Services officials, but there are several pantries and food programs always available to DeKalb residents in need.

A spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Human Services added that “due to inflation and labor shortages, we are working on an increased volume of SNAP applications and renewals.”

The spokesperson said, “They anticipate that customers will be caught up in the Thanksgiving holiday,” and those with issues can call (404) 657-3433, 800-423-4746 or visit compass.ga.gov .

There are also food pantries and other food options in DeKalb County that serve residents during the holidays.

Commissioner larry johnson began hosting mobile pantries in October with the Center Helping Obesity in Children End Successfully (CHOICES). A spokesperson for Johnson’s office added that a date and location have not been set for December, but the schedule can be viewed at www.eventbrite.com/o/choices-8073480513.

Johnson’s outdoor food pantry event uses a drive-thru model to serve recipients.

“Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve been working hard to make sure families have enough to eat,” Johnson said in October. “With the holiday season approaching, we will continue to ensure that we reduce as many burdens as possible for families, including the provision of food.”
